Introducing...

Designer is a word I’ve always reserved for the naturally artistic.  Designers are painters and sewers and architects. Designers are inventors and seers. Designers are geniuses, creating something from nothing, miracle doers. Designers have always been someone I couldn’t be.

When I desperately needed a way [really, a word] to connect my passion for both cosmetology and writing, I described myself as having a gift for style. A flair for arranging hair. Style. A specific choice of words. Style.

In the last Spring Quarter of Masters program, I took a career transforming class: Digital Era Skills with Zoe Cohen, a digital communications firm founder and professor who was really down to teach. Sis let us literally take control of our education by allowing us to redesign the syllabus to meet our personal or career goals. We did everything from brand personas to content calendars and more marketing/communications gibberish. She was the first person to tell me I had “an eye for design,” enough to earn a 100% in the class.

In the same time, I had the privilege of working on a social media campaign for a sermon series for Dawrell Rich’s Come To The River. Rich is a pastor and urban planner with a background in architecture, and the second person to inform me of this talent that I never designated to my own identity.

Nice words mean more coming from people who know what they’re talking about. And so, my eyes were open.

I was confident in the work I did. I’m confident in the work I do! Logos ✔️ Websites ✔️ Social Branding ✔️ Natural Hair Styles ✔️Cutting and Color ✔️ Wigs and Crochet ✔️ Book Cover Design ✔️ Self-Publishing Formatting ✔️ But, I had no idea that I was a designer. Designers are so ethereal, clever, impressive. I didn’t feel like it, but I am. Wow. I’m a designer!

When I think back, I may have always been. I was probably 7 when I first said to myself I could design clothes. I never wanted to be the next Dior or Dolce, I still don’t, I just wanted to see something I saw in my head on my own body. It was a fleeting thought. Rarely to be thought of again...

Until now...
