CUT YOUR HAIR!
Your fear of cutting your hair is outdated. Yes, I’m coming for you.
I’ll be honest, it wasn’t until I started cosmetology school that I became fully comfortable with getting my hair cut. I, only now, understand the MAJOR benefits of a good cut, including getting rid of nasty ends, which creates seamless styling, and in turn nurtures length retention and aids in growth.
Genetics, hormones, and stress ultimately determine hair length. However, personal eating and exercise habits, chemicals, certain hairstyles, and hair cuts (or lack thereof) play vital roles in getting your hair to the length determined by your mama and papa. I know, I know, relaxers took our hair out, braids took our edges out, and the hairdresser on the block never knew what “just a trim” was – I’ve been there. For my wavy/curly girls, pre-Deva cut, no one knew how to cut your hair, it looked great straight, but horrible curly, so when you finally traded your flat iron for Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, you had no idea where to get your hair done.
Luckily for all of us, this is 2017 and Black and curly hair care has come SUCH a long way. At Empire, I’m learning how to do, cut, color and slay Black girl hair, White girl hair and every Brown and Asian beauty in between. There are thousands of classes out there for licensed stylists to expand their knowledge on our hair, so we no longer have to succumb to the horror of bad haircuts or any other salon service. Do your research, ask the receptionist hard questions, ask the stylist when’s the last time he/she went to a class on your hair type, if she doesn’t spend her days doing your type of hair, pictures are worth 1000 words, and ask for referrals from family, friends and the girl in the mall with bomb hair.
YouTube does not have the answers when it comes to haircuts or trims. YOUTUBE DOES NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS. Do not cut your hair at home. DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR AT HOME. You have the wrong scissors, there is a reason why professionals use shears and there is a reason why shears are so expensive. Trust me.
Everyone’s hair is different, but good guidelines to follow are:
- If you heat-style (blow dry, flat iron, curl), get a trim every 6 – 8 weeks.
- Naturals, get a cut ever 3 to 4 months.
- If it takes you longer than 15 minutes to detangle your hair, it’s time for a trim.
- If your hair isn’t growing, it’s time for a trim.
- If you haven’t had a trim in 6 months, it’s time for a trim.
There is no need to be afraid of a haircut anymore. All a cut will do is make your hair easier to comb, much easier to style and make it grow faster than you’ve seen in years.
