The Difference You'd Make

Last night, I attended a Book Release & Open Mic hosted by my beautiful friend Ashlie Pruitt (black venus | @blackv3nus) & her beautiful friend Samantha Casseus (@samcasss). To say I was inspired would be the worst use of my words. I was honored to have been there and so Godly proud of the Black Greatness that exuded from a small group with an incredibly large presence.

I was stunned by people last night. In awe of God's grace that He would even allow us to be vessels of such strong feelings and let us form them into something to share with the world. I tried to take it all in and be thankful for words, eloquence, rhythm, rhyme and emotions.

Last night, with all the crap I talk about Boston, they showed out! So much so that I came home to write and write and write.

But before you read another word of mine, head to:

the doctor is in

What the hell you wanna own a salon for?
Didn't you want to be a doctor?
Change lives? Save lives?
The money? The power?
The difference you'd make with all that brain in your head!
Have you ever touched someone's head?
Cause where I come from that's a sign of disrespect ...
Unless you're a ... hairdresser or a barber.
Have you ever felt someone's feelings before they've said a word
Fiddled with their tresses and fondled their stresses
Have you ever been enamored by a crown you couldn't see?
By a glow that took you in so deeply captured like a blanket glazed like the sun
Have you ever felt overwhelmed with gratitude?
Overtaken by a sense of almost undeserving pride?
By a woman placing her trust literally in your hands when you can tell she's never trusted anyone else so confidently before
How could I let her down?
Diamonds I see in her eyes that I can't see
Standing behind her holding her up with my tools like strings to a puppet
Like strings on a bass plucking away her insecurities
Like strings in my vocals synthesizing the sympathy in my heart made human in front of me day after day
Unstoppable is her name.
Her momma gave it to her first.
I gave it to her last.
Last minute before prom
Last second before the aisle
Last day before she's due
Last minute before her daughters' prom
Last second before her daughter's down the aisle
Last day before her daughter's due
How could you reduce my God given talent to make more gorgeous that which is already close to perfect to that of less than a surgeon
He diagnoses, I discover
He stitches, I heal
He does the surgery, but I aid in recovery
He only hears of the pain, but I have the pleasure of rejoicing in the joys
The salon is refuge
The chair is peace
My voice is solitude
My hands are sanctified
Blessed
Have you ever witnessed the smile of a confident woman?
You're welcome.
